This unit is in charge of the integral study of patients with diverse gastrointestinal problems by studying the physiology of the organs of the upper digestive tract, such as the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum. At this unit, persons of all ages are seen for conditions such as:
- Gastroesophageal reflux
- Ulcerous gastritis
- Colon conditions
- Functional disorders of the digestive tract
- Hiatal hernia
- Colitis
- Constipation
- Diverticular disease
- Pelvic muscle disorders
- Anorectal conditions of neurological or infectious origin such as fistulae and abscesses
- Lesions of the anal muscles due to trauma or surgery
- Benign or malignant tumors of the esophagus, stomach and small intestine
- Chronic anemia
Among the studies currently done at the Digestive Physiology Unit are: endoscopy, manometry, 24 pH level, H. pylori breath detection test, physiological colon and rectal studies and endoscopic capsule insertion and viewing.
